I recently converted a Latitude E6500 from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 14.04. Everything seems to work fine except I can't get any audio when I connect to my TV using a DisplayPort /HDMI converter. I got audio under Win7 so I know it's not a hardware problem. If I go into sound settings there is no selection for HDMI. The Nvidia card does not appear as a choice in the Alsamixer. If I run aplay -L it doesn't show Nvidia either.
Nvidia support told me: "You are probably only seeing Intel due to Optimus architecture. (laptop architecture that switches between Intel and NVIDIA GPUs, which is not well supported by the NVIDIA Linux driver unless you can disable the Intel GPU or disable Optimus) If you can disable the onboard Intel GPU, or can disable Optimus, you would probably see the devices running aplay -L."
I don't see any way in the BIOS to disable Intel GPU or Optimus. Does anyone know how to do this or have another approach to making Nvidia show up where it's supposed to?
thanks!
