I've got a Latitude D600, running Windows XP Professional, that I've just managed to keep running seemingly forever, with only the occasional simple repair. Recently, the laptop would not power-up, when the power button is pressed. Fortunately, I had a spare base unit, so I swapped out the hard drive, the keyboard, battery and the display, and the laptop was up and running in less than 15 minutes. However, I'm wondering what the problem is with the other base unit.
Other than the fact that it will not power up (yes, it's plugged in and the battery is charged), when you press the power button, I notice that the Device Status power light illuminates (right side display), but the Keyboard Status lights only lightly flicker - when they will usually illuminate fully, as the laptop runs through the initial post-test, before launching Windows.
So, the Keyboard Status lights flicker for about 3-5 seconds, and then both those lights and the Device Status light goes out. Repeatedly pressing the power button results in the same thing.
I wondered if anyone had experienced this problem, as it would be nice to rectify the other base unit, if possible, since it was actually the newer of the two. I just don't know if this is a problem with the power-up switch, the power supply or something else. I'm pretty handy and willing to swap parts out, and I've got a third base unit, which I could cannibalize for parts - but I'm only going to start on this, if someone has unequivocally experienced this problem previously (i.e. no speculative wild goose chases). Thanks!
