Vostro 1720 keyboard stopped working

I cannot get into my computer at all.  I try typing my password in and get nothing.  If I hit the back space it types in dots in the password area going forward.  I tried plugging in a keyboard, nothing.  Any ideas???  It is a Vostro 1720.
