'Tinny' sound from Dell XPS 1645 internal speakers

I have had my Dell XPS 1645 for approx 4-5 years so this may simply be an issue of wear and tear.

I was running Chrome and watching a stream on twitch.tv on the 23rd August at about 75% volume level when there was a sudden drop in terms of audio quality; now everything sounds tinny/ no bass/distorted/quieter.

Audio performance was great before this event, and still sounds good through headphones (it is the internal speakers that are suffering).

To clarify, the audio is muffled or tinny; there isn't an ambient noise or interference, and the volume settings have not been changed as to cause this effect to my knowledge.

I've tried all the solutions I could find but let me know if there is something I'm missing!

I have uninstalled IDT drivers and reinstalled from the dell site and from other sites, I have tried using the default Microsoft drivers.

I have run the Dell Diagnostics and PC Checkup tests; speakers pass.

I have disabled enhancements and messed around with speaker properties to no avail.

The speakers can still go to 100% volume (obviously this sounds horrible). Also I have never in the past played audio at levels like this nor have I had any issues with audio in the past.

Have I blown my speakers? Is there a loose connection? Most importantly is there anything I can try or do? I'd rather not have to pay massive amounts for replacements as that will probably mean me jumping ship from Dell for good and getting a nice upgrade!
